Howlin' Wolf 1910 – 1976
I couldn't do no yodelin', so I turned to howlin'.
Howlin' Wolf stood 6'3 and weighed 300 pounds. His voice was so powerful that Sam Phillips thought he needed a new microphone just to handle it. A crate fell on his kidney during World War II, and he channeled that pain into every howl. He was one of the foundational voices of Chicago blues. More on Howlin' Wolf →

Who Did It Better

Mary J. Blige

As 0:30 reaches for a language big enough to hold forever. Not the forever of human calendars but the forever of creation. He will love her until rainbows burn out and oceans swallow mountains. That is how long.

He is not exaggerating. He is searching for a measurement that fits what he feels. No word was ever built for that job. Some things do not end when the world does.

I Will Always Love You
If I should stay I would only be in your way
Album art

She has to go. Staying would only be in his way. Bittersweet memories are all she takes. She is not what he needs and she knows it. Goodbye and do not cry. The love does not end. The relationship does.

You’re Kidding, Right
Four of five original members of The Bar-Kays died in the 1967 plane crash that killed Otis Redding. The sole survivor, trumpeter Ben Cauley, sat next to Otis and survived by clinging to a seat cushion in the freezing lake. Ben Cauley was sitting next to Otis Redding. He held onto a seat cushion in ice-cold water while his bandmates and a legend sank.
Soul in the Movies
Bridget Jones's Diary Bridget Jones's Diary is a romantic comedy that understands the right sad song is better than therapy. Diana Ross's 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' -- her 1970 solo reimagining of the Gaye/Terrell duet -- plays as Bridget realizes she's in love with Mark Darcy. Nothing will keep them apart. Not even the snow. Ain't no mountain high enough. The snow was the least of it.

Why We're Here
Most of us grew up with free radio. Then corporations took over the playlist. Then we found Spotify and YouTube -- until the algorithm quietly decided what we liked, and suddenly we were stuck on repeat again. There's so much music out there, and only so much time to hear it.
At HotSupper, we just want to open things up a little. Maybe you'll stumble on an artist you've never heard of. Maybe you'll rediscover a song you'd completely forgotten. Maybe you'll just tap your toes. Either way, it's yours to explore. And if you have ideas to make this place better, we're all ears.
